Glaucoma is diagnosed when the eye pressure is too high. Irreversible damage to the optic nerve happens when the inner regulation of the eye pressure is disturbed. Visual field defects accumulate insiduously over time, without treatment the disease leads to complete blindness of the affected eye. In early stages the disease often goes unnoticed, there is no pain and changes happen little-by-little.
Glaucoma can be stopped by treatment when discovered early and followed up closely.

Macular degeneration causes loss of sight in the central part of the visual field, people with advanced disease can not use their vision to see small details and read. 
Macular degeneration can be slowed, reversal of the lost function of central vision is not yet possible.
